THE QUIET FIRST STEP,before it becomes a case.
Ombuds is a confidential, informal conversation with a neutral professional, not a filing, not a record, not a decision against anyone. It's how a coach-athlete rift or a locker-room dispute gets heard before it hardens into something public. Nothing here binds anyone to anything.
WHAT IT IS
CONTROL BEFORE CONFLICT,not victory after it.
An Ombuds process gives anyone inside a sports program, an athlete, a coach, a staff member, a confidential place to raise a concern and be heard, without triggering a formal complaint, a hearing, or a public record. The Ombuds listens, asks questions, and helps surface options. They don't rule for or against anyone; they help the people closest to the problem find their own way through it.

Something feels off, but it's not a "case" yet
A coach's comments have crossed a line, or a teammate dynamic has soured. It doesn't need a lawyer; it needs a place to say it out loud, safely.
You're worried about your standing on the team
Nobody wants to be "the one who complained." Ombuds keeps the conversation off the record while you decide what, if anything, comes next.
An institution wants an early-warning system
Athletic departments use Ombuds as a standing option in their programs, so small frictions surface before they become recruiting fallout or headlines.
You're not sure the issue is "big enough"
It doesn't have to be. Ombuds exists precisely for the concerns that fall short of formal complaints but still deserve a real conversation.
WHAT TO EXPECT
A PROCESS YOU CAN SEEbefore you commit to it.
No surprises. Every Ombuds engagement follows the same clear steps, at a pace set by you.
Submit a private inquiry: no names required to start, no case number, no institutional record created.
FAIR pairs you with a neutral who understands your sport's structure and pressures, not a generalist case manager.
You talk through what's happening. The Ombuds listens, clarifies options, and helps you think through next steps, informally, off the record.
Resolve it informally, escalate to Mediation, or take no further action. Ombuds never forces an outcome; it just gives you a clearer path to one.
WHO CONDUCTS IT
SPORT-SPECIFIC NEUTRALS,not generalist case managers.
Every FAIR Ombuds has sat inside sport, as counsel, administrators, or arbitrators.
They know how a locker room works, how eligibility rules bite, and how NIL pressure changes a conversation. That context is what makes an Ombuds conversation useful instead of generic.
COMMON QUESTIONS
BEFORE YOU REACH OUT,the honest answers.
Is this really confidential, or does it go into a file somewhere?
Fully confidential. Ombuds conversations create no institutional record and are not reported to coaches, administrators, or opposing parties unless you choose to escalate.
Will this hurt my standing on the team or with my institution?
No. Ombuds is explicitly designed as a safe, off-the-record first step. Nothing you say here is used against you in a later Mediation or Arbitration.
Do I need a lawyer to use Ombuds?
No. Most Ombuds conversations happen without counsel present. If your situation later needs formal representation, your Ombuds can help you understand when that's the case.
What happens if Ombuds doesn't resolve it?
You're free to move to Mediation or Arbitration at any point, Ombuds is never a required or blocking step, just the lowest-friction place to start.
